Play your own copy of Midtown Madness (Microsoft, 1999) in this browser. The game files come from your own disc image, are unpacked on your machine and never leave it.
Status: not playable yet. The port runs the real game and reaches the Main Menu, but the menus do not yet react to the mouse, so no race can be started. How to play, and what works today.
Works in current desktop Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, in a normal (not private) window. Needs about 600 MB of free space for the game (most of it the music) and about 2 GB of free memory while the game runs, 3 GB while it is being translated for your browser (the first start only; later starts reuse that work). Unpacking the disc takes under a minute in Chrome, Edge and Safari and about three minutes in Firefox, once.
This site ships the player only. No part of the game is included here and nothing is downloaded from us: to play, you supply two files from your own copy of the game.
.img or .bin with the .cue sheet next to it (the sheet is what names the music tracks), or a plain .iso. It carries the cities, the cars, the interface and the music.midtown.exe from Microsoft's Midtown Madness 1.2 update (build 1589). The copy on the disc is SafeDisc-protected and cannot run. Both files are read inside your browser and stored only in this browser's private storage (OPFS). Nothing is uploaded anywhere, and this site never redistributes game data. See the game copyright notice and what this project is.
Install Midtown Madness in this browser. You need the two files listed under “What you have to bring”. Choose them in this order — the install starts as soon as both are chosen:
midtown.exe from Microsoft's Midtown Madness 1.2 update, build 1589 (the copy on the disc is copy-protected and cannot run).Choose the disc image first. The install writes about 600 MB into this browser's private storage; it takes under a minute in Chrome, Edge and Safari and about three minutes in Firefox.
dd if=/dev/sr0 of=midtown.iso bs=2048 status=progressNo CD drive? A USB CD/DVD drive works. The image never leaves your computer: this page reads it inside your browser.
Your progress is kept only in this browser. Back it up to keep it safe or to carry it to another browser or computer — the backup is a ZIP file written to your computer, nothing is uploaded anywhere. It mirrors the game's own folder: players\players.dir (the profiles on this machine), players\player0.cfg and players\player0.sav (a profile's settings and progress), the driver tables under players\chicago\ (the game writes them again when it starts) and your settings from the registry key the game itself uses, …\Microsoft Games\Midtown Madness\1.0. Restoring also accepts those profile files on their own, taken from a Windows installation of the game.
These are the options of the game's original Launcher. Changes are saved as you make them and apply the next time you press Play.

Click a binding, then press a key, or press a controller button or move a stick. A stick moved for one direction also covers the opposite one (Move Up also gives Move Down). × clears a binding.
Browsers keep Esc for leaving fullscreen and releasing the mouse (Chrome and Edge let the game have it in fullscreen). This key works as Esc in the game everywhere.
